ArtiSta. Rita US Tour Review - Art Arcilla

It was an amazing eye-opener. Usually, when we hear of a Filipino group, we usually expect a chorale with choir type of music.
This was a "broadway musical play" --- an amazing and a thoroughly enjoyable performance. There was comedy, there was a love story, there was jazz, vaudeville, ballads, a bit of hip-hop all wrapped up in our Kapampangan language. A standing-ovation performance.
The music was beautiful --- a combination of new compositions and traditional Kapampangan folk songs. Beautifully arranged and excellently sung, these new and classic Kapampangan songs brought out the beauty and the versatility of our Kapampangan langauge.
The singing and performance of the the players was all excellent. The choruses came out as one, big, beautiful voice. It uplifted my patriotic spirit and renewed my sense of home for Pampanga and our town of St.Rita. The only minus that i believe needs to be addressed was the sound electronics. I am not an expert on stage/voice electronics, but there were some moments of either the electronics/wireless (?) was lagging or experienced some delays. Overall, it was an outstanding performance. Bravo!!! Luid Kayu ArtiSt.Rita Luid ya ing Sta.Rita Luid ya ing Pampanga.

Dacal a salamat queng binye yung saya ampong lugud careng cabalen queti America.

Dacal a salamat

Independence Day...Are We Truly Free? - Atty. Ramoncito Ocampo

Independence Day...Are We Truly Free?

With the 2010 Philippine presidential election looming in the horizon, it is not quite a far-fetched idea to envision that in this and succeeding elections, more overseas-based Filipinos especially those based in the USA may be inclined to throw their respective hats into the Philippine political arena. This distinct possibility of Filipino-Americans vying for political offices in our country bodes well for a nation which is constantly seeking/searching for alternative choices in the Philippine political arena. However, before Filipino-Americans could realistically venture in Philippine political affairs, there is an equally urgent need for us to put our acts together for the common good here in the USA . For example, in celebrating the forthcoming Philippine Independence Day (June 12), is it not possible to institutionalize a multi-talented, ever growing and diversely-represented entity to, once and for all, closely coordinate on an annual/ongoing basis the efforts/resources and activities by consular officers/different organizations if only to jointly promote and showcase the best of the Filipino people’s culture and traditions? It has come to my understanding that there are at least 3 Independence Day celebrations scheduled simultaneously in the Los Angeles county by different organizations working independently of one another. It is truly a sad commentary to the Filipino people’s utter lack of visible cohesion on a day which inevitably happens every year and ought to be one of the most important occasions to remember and celebrate our identity as a nation. Indeed, it is not unusual for organizations with supposedly common objectives/agendas to compete needlessly, duplicating, impeding, belittling or worse, demeaning the efforts of another if only to make themselves and/or their respective organizations get all the credit, commendation/accolades and hug the limelight, so to speak. This dismal lack of cohesiveness/continuity and seemingly unresolved rivalry/factionalism among Filipino leaders/organizations in commemorating an event which celebrates our freedom reminded me of Galatians 5:13-15 which state…"Remember that you have been called to live a life of freedom but not a freedom which gives free rein to the flesh. Out of love, place yourselves at one another’s service. The whole law has found its fulfillment in this one saying, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ But if you go on biting and tearing one another, I warn you, you will end up in mutual destruction."

It has been commented that with more than 2 Million Filipino-Americans, we could and should have, by now, achieved substantial clout in US political affairs which would then, redound to the fast/easy passage of legislation benefiting our people such as the Filipino Veterans Equity Bill. Unfortunately, this rather divisive, aloof, rivalry-oriented mentality/attitude of our so-called community leaders aggravated by indifference and apathy among many of our people, has remained unabated all these years and will continue to derail our people’s thrust towards mutually beneficial social enhancement, economic stability and political maturity. It is my prayer that more Filipino-Americans, particularly those endowed with God-given integrity (MAKADIYOS), deeply-seated patriotism (MAKABAYAN) and Christ-centered compassion for the poor (MAKATAO) and blessed as well with an abundance of worldly resources, start getting more actively involved and someday instill a united, Christ-centered dimension in Philippine economic, social and political affairs not only here in the USA but even more so in the Philippines. After all, as written in Ephesians 4:3-6…"Let us make every effort to preserve the unity of the body which has the Spirit as its origin and peace as its binding force. There is but one body and one Spirit and one calling to which God has called us There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, Who is above all, works through all and is in all." As such, there is a clarion call for Christians, the chosen people of God, to stand fast in the gap and hold its ground as one body wielding weapons of righteousness to free the Filipino people and resist the evil one whose tactics/spirit of pride, envy, jealousy, division, selfish rivalries and parochial factionalism is very much at work and has already wrecked havoc, confusion and disillusionment as it is…Di ba?

TO RESOLVE CURRENT CRISIS, WHAT IS NEEDED IS MERCY, NOT SACRIFICE! - Atty. Ramoncito Ocampo

TO RESOLVE CURRENT CRISIS, WHAT IS NEEDED IS MERCY, NOT SACRIFICE!

In the Gospel of Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus said…"And when the Son of Man comes in His glory and with His angels, He will sit at the throne of His glory. And all nations will be gathered before Him and He will separate them like a shepherd divides the goats and the sheep. He will set the sheep on His right and the goats on His left. To the ones on the right, He will tell them, ‘Welcome, you who are blessed by My Father and inherit the kingdom which has been prepared for you even before the foundation of world. For I was hungry and you fed Me; I was thirsty and you gave Me a drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was in prison and you visited Me. I was sick and you comforted Me. ’ Then, the righteous will ask Him, ‘ Lord, when did we see you hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, in prison or sick.’ Then He will tell them, ‘Truly I say to you, whatever you do to the least of My brethren, you did it unto Me. ’ Then, He will say to those on the left, ‘Get away from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you did not give Me anything to eat; I was thirsty and you did not give Me any drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in; I was naked and you did not clothe Me; I was sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ Then they will also answer saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick or in prison and did not minister to you?’ The He will answer them, saying ‘Truly, I say to you, whatever you did not do to the least of My brethren, neither have you done it to Me.’ And these shall go to eternal punishment but the righteous into eternal life."

The above words of exhortation and admonition must be reflected by each and every Christian Filipino for they contain, I believe, invaluable insights as to the cruxes/solutions to our country’s woes. We are a nation who, for so many centuries, is supposedly a Christian one but sadly enough, many of us, wittingly or unwittingly, do not live as spiritually mature Christians in accord with what we have heard, learned and accepted as the truth. Instead of putting our various talents, resources and capabilities and use them for the common good, we use it for our own selfish interests and engage in endless bickering, jealousy, envy, factionalism, selfish rivalries, etc. and refuse to help one another simply because we are not the ones who will get the credit for the good being done. Hindi tayo ang bida, ika nga, so why help? But what of it, for as long as the job gets done, does it really matter who gets the credit?

At this crucial time of our country’s existence, there is a clarion call for all Filipinos to unite as one nation and help in alleviating the deplorable economic plight of our beloved countrymen. Though it appears on the surface that our country’s politicians and some prominent Filipinos here and in the Philippines are responding favorably and generously to President Macapagal-Arroyo’s call for sacrifice, a great majority of our countrymen are essentially sitting at the sidelines and quite hesitant to lend a helping hand since our country’s leaders have not really earned what is sorely needed in a crisis like this…pure and simple trust and confidence. After all, if and when financial contributions do come in, whom can we trust to manage the funds? Is it really going to the would-be recipients or is it, as what inevitably happens in many cases, going to be dissipated into the pockets of officials who are essentially wolves in sheep’s clothing?

Which is why I believe that if only to move the Filipino people to heed the President’s call for help in resolving the financial/economic crisis we are facing as a nation, the call should not so much one of a secular call for more sacrifice, especially if the ones calling for sacrifice do not have the perceived credibility. After all, the great majority of the Filipino people have already suffered so much for quite a while as it is. Instead, what is needed is a spiritual conversion of the Filipino people as true Christians, especially those who have been entrusted with so much power, abilities and resources, so much so that the more affluent sectors of our people would help not so much out of sacrifice but rather out of mercy and compassion towards our impoverished countrymen who are indeed, bearing the added burden of the current crisis. A spiritual conversion in which the governing authorities could finally be trusted and truly be compassionate to alleviate the plight of the common Tao, especially the poor, and be a government of the people, by the people and for the people. After all, it is written, "It is mercy I desire, not sacrifice."

Let those who are rich in the goods of this world not rely on the uncertainty of wealth and rely on God instead. They should not be too proud, conceited, indifferent, greedy or self- centered/selfish as to want more and more but instead, to do good, to be rich in good works, ready to distribute and willing to share their abundance with those who have so much less. After all, naked we came into this world and naked we will go. We cannot take our millions and our vast landholdings, our very expensive toys or adornments into the other world. The good that we can do to the least of our brothers and sisters, we do it unto our Lord and God Jesus and the good that we don’t do and could have reasonably done, will be held against us for sure. Let us always remember that nothing is hidden and all lies bare in the eyes of Him to whom all of us will, someday, render an account of what we did with our lives here and the resources entrusted to us on earth, di ba?

ArtiSta. Rita US Tour Reactions and Reviews

Below are various reactions and reviews of the ArtiSta Rita's shows in the US from May 18 to May 31.

We enjoyed the concert last Saturday May 24 and we wish you could extend your stay in San Diego and have another musical event so we can watch it again. It was a joyful moments of experience when I first saw ArtiSta.Rita performed at Kimbal Park in National City. These talented singers from Pampanga gave me a new perspective on how proud I should be as a Kapampangan. I would definitely recommend these group of singers and the CDs to anyone. I informed my cousins from San Francisco Bay area to watch your concert this coming May 31st at the San Jose Performing Arts Center.

Thank you very much for bringing the RitaSta.Rita cast in U.S and we hope to see them again next year. If you plan to have another concert in San Diego in the future please let me know how I can be of assistance in the advertisement and selling process of the tickets. I don't expect any remuneration and this is purely service to my fellow Kapampangan.

Please let me know when you release your fourth album so I can order and also informed our beloved Kapampangan in San Diego especially our fellow Bambanense kabalens, USA.

Among Ed's Blogsite Launched

"There is a crisis of hope in our country today. Many of our people have lost sight of a better future, consoling themselves of the fact that they are still surviving in the here and now…But by your rants and raves, be voices of hope, upholding the good and condemning the evil with equal force."

With much optimism for youth involvement in shaping the conscience of the nation, Gov. Panlilio, more popularly known as Among Ed led the launching of his blogsite (www.amonged.org) before a young crowd from the Manila-based Bloggers' Kapihan and the Pampanga Youth Council. The event was held on June 7 (Saturday) at the Executive House of the Pampanga Provincial Capitol.

In the forum that preceded the launching, Jhay Rocas, a Bloggers' Kapihan Crew and youth leader from De La Salle University-Dasmariñas spoke on blogging for good governance. "While good governance is a relatively new concept in Philippine politics and we have yet to really experience it," he said, "we get glimpses of it every now and then in leaders like Among Ed. With the emergence of a new media (through blogging and the net), we now have greater access to information and people are more free to express their opinions and sentiments." He added that the internet is not just for entertainment and recreation but also for involvement in serious matters like good governance. Angelica Guevarra, a youth leader from the Pampanga Youth Council also spoke on responsible citizenship.

Among Ed's blogsite project was conceptualized in April as soon as the priest-turned-governor's campaign website went off-line. In response to public clamor for news and updates about Among Ed and his leadership of Pampanga, volunteers from the Creative Team and the Kapampangan Marangal. Inc. (KMI) worked to transform the campaign website to a more dynamic and interactive site.

"Blogging has, in recent years, emerged as a primary means of self-expression among individuals all over the world, most especially the youth. It is an excellent way of getting people to reflect and discern on matters affecting their lives. The idea of maximizing its potentials to influence others about important concerns such as politics and social development is fast gaining ground in the midst of various crises confronting societies here and elsewhere. It is essential for the one who governs and the ones being governed to communicate and engage in a frequent dialogue to make good governance happen," says KMI Executive Director Averell Laquindanum. Among Ed is believed to be the first Governor in the country to open and launch a blogsite.

Yesterday's launching was a joint undertaking of KMI and the Provincial Capitol, in cooperation with Bloggers' Kapihan, Pampanga Youth Council, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., and the University of the Assumption. (KMI)

Tantingco: Saving heritage churches

(From sunstar.com.ph/pampanga)

Tantingco: Saving heritage churches
By Robby Tantingco
Peanut Gallery

FOR many years now, church cultural workers have been struggling to save old churches and going around the country to educate people on the importance of preserving these edifices.

I've been privileged to work with the best of them, including Professor Regalado Trota Jose, who gave a summer course at Holy Angels University (HAU) not too long ago, and some committee members of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), which sponsors the biennial convention of church cultural workers.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

I know their difficulties and the kind of personal sacrifices they make, and many times I feel sorry for them because they are so undermanned and so under-appreciated, sometimes even by the very Church whose property they are protecting.

But last week, we were all caught flat-footed by the news that Pope Benedict XVI and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had signed a treaty that aims to preserve heritage churches in the country, during the President's visit to the Vatican not too long ago.

The bilateral agreement was ratified last week by the Papal Nuncio and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Tasked to implement the provisions of the treaty are the CBCP and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

This is exactly what church cultural workers have long been praying for. I join them in celebrating their victory, and I'd like to give a toast especially to Professor Jose, whose presence we shall miss in the work ahead because he has decided to retire to a monastery.

I hope that like Ambeth Ocampo and Gang Gomez (a.k.a. Dom Martin de Jesus, OSB), who by the way are both Kapampangans, Professor Jose will find a way to continue serving our cultural advocacy.

Even as you read this, old churches throughout the country are being torn down, renovated or replaced with modern structures.

There is nothing wrong with purposeful renovation; churches that are leaking, crumbling or getting perennially flooded should in fact really be renovated or rebuilt, because there's no point in preserving the antiquity of a building at the expense of the convenience and safety of the churchgoers.

What should be regulated or controlled are the renovations being done by parishes that have no specific or urgent purpose except to make their church look a little better or more modern.

Sometimes they do it because they use the renovation of the church as the excuse for raising funds. Sometimes the parish priest simply wants to leave his legacy and personal imprint for his congregation to remember him by, before he moves on to his next assignment.

In these instances, it's better to let the old church stay old. No modern architecture can match the classic elegance of heritage churches. We are being foolish when we impose passing trends in architectural design on a church that has withstood centuries of countless changing styles and climes.

Technically, churches are owned by the archdiocese, not by the residents of the parish. This, however, should not be taken to mean that the parish priest is the owner of the church and therefore can do anything he pleases.

The church owner is the institution the priest represents, which is the archdiocese; therefore he should get the owner's permission before he can touch it.

Meanwhile, the parishioners -- even if they are technically not the owner of the church -- have a moral claim to it, because they (or their ancestors) are the church's builders, users and keepers.

The priest, who is assigned to the parish only for a maximum of six years, should consult them before undertaking any renovation.

I am emphasizing the role of the priests in the preservation of heritage churches because aside from wars, natural calamities, thieves and antique dealers, it is the priests who do a lot of damage to churches.

Some of them do it with the best intentions and are only ill-advised; others rightfully put the safety and convenience of their parishioners above heritage preservation.

If it comes to choosing between preserving an antique church and making the church safe for the churchgoers, the first thing to do is look for a win-win situation, where you achieve one without sacrificing the other.

If that is not possible, I can understand why a priest would allow the renovation of a church at the expense of its heritage value.

We Kapampangans have some of the country's most impressive colonial churches, because we were pampered by the Spaniards and also because our artisans and craftsmen were the best.

I have read many historical accounts of churches in Cebu and Ilocos being built by Kapampangan carvers and carpenters, and even today, the works of ecclesiastical artists from Pampanga like Willy Layug (of Betis), Tom Joven (of Bacolor), Nick Lugue (of Apalit), Jeric Canlas (of Mexico), Ely Mangalindan (of Sasmuan), Eddie Miclat (of San Luis), can be found in churches and private altars all over the Philippines.

Tourists marvel at the beautiful churches in Pampanga (like Betis, San Luis, Lubao, Apalit, Sta. Ana, Candaba, Sta. Rita, Minalin, Angeles, Bacolor), not realizing that these have been renovated or restored in recent times.

When I saw the old photographs of how they looked in the 1800s, I thought how infinitely richer we would be now had we prevented all the alterations made along the way.

But there's no use crying over spilt milk. Let us just try our best to preserve whatever has remained of them.

PRESS RELEASE

Capitol distributes quarry shares

City of San Fernando – A total of Php 33,147,000.00 was handed over by Gov. Eddie Panlilio to barangay officials and representatives of the mayors in municipalities and barangays where quarrying operations are held.

The giving out of shares was conducted yesterday at the Benigno Aquino Hall wherein the mentioned amount represented the 6-month share of the 10 municipalities and 40 barangays from the quarry income.

The distribution of quarry shares was put on hold since November 2007 pending the resolution of the Executive Department’s petition for the suspension of the implementation of Ordinance 176.

The distribution yesterday was in lieu of the Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) on the implementation of Ordinance 176 issued by the Regional Trial Court here on May 13, 2008. The distribution was based on the old ordinance that provides for a 30-30-40 percent sharing scheme based on the P150.00 sand tax for the province, municipality and barangay, respectively.

The municipality of Porac and barangay Manibaug-Pasig, also in Porac, received the lion’s share, receiving P12M and P4M respectively. According to Chairman Marcelino Escoto of Manibaug-Pasig, the issuance of the funds will facilitate the early release of the Philhealth cards for his constituents, payment of electric bills and the immediate implementation of his Balik-Barangay program.

The total shares given to the municipalities are: Bacolor – Php 864,000; Floridablanca – Php 2, 868,750; Lubao – Php 603,000; Mabalacat – Php 225,000; Macabebe – Php 2,250; Mexico – Php 96,750; Minalin- Php137,250; Porac - Php12, 141,000; San Simon- Php 38,250; and Sta. Rita- Php 342,750. /PIO

Philippine Madrigal Singers set for 2008 Command Performances in the US

PHILIPPINE MADRIGAL SINGERS SET FOR
2008 COMMAND PERFORMANCES IN THE U.S.

Los Angeles, California/Manila, Philippines - The music and magic of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, one of the best choirs in the world, comes to Southern California and Nevada this summer as part of a series of Command Performances presented by Philippine Airlines and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Historic Filipinotown in association with the Philippine Patrons of the Arts-USA, TDRZ Productions, Inc. and with Asian Journal as the official media sponsor.

With one-night only performances set in Las Vegas , San Diego and Los Angeles , the appearance of the Philippine Madrigal Singers (or “Madz” for short) will surely be a highlight of this summer’s concert season as well as part of the month-long Philippine Independence celebration. Many aficionados and devoted fans of the Madz look forward to their musical virtuosity, technical proficiency and soulful singing. With a highly eclectic repertoire -- from Renaissance madrigal music to the avant-garde, from Filipino and international folksongs to the latest pop hits, even from the most cerebral choral masterpieces to the most humorous of novelty numbers -- this world-class choir can sing anything with authenticity and professionalism while keeping their audience thoroughly entertained.

The Madz have consistently won top prizes in the most prestigious choral competitions held around the world. As Philippine ambassadors of culture and goodwill, the Madz have given command performances for royalty and heads of state including Pope Paul 6th, U.S. Presidents Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon, King Juan Carlos de Bourbon and Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

Madz alumni are much sought-after as singers, conductors, arrangers and music educators. Its corps of composers and musical arrangers continue to produce new compositions and choral settings of Philippine music, thus contributing to the global growth of choral literature. Averaging two international concert tours per year, the Madz relentlessly engages in the promotion of Philippine music and the Filipino Artist globally.

“To be able to bring the Madrigals to Southern California in support of the Rotary Club is absolutely amazing”, says Vicente Ching, President of the HiFi Rotary Club. “We are proud to be able to present the best singers in the world to new audiences in the U.S. ”

“For the Los Angeles concert,” explains Ms. Guila Maramba of the Rotary Club, “there will be a special pre-concert reception that is being put together by world renown chef Cecilia de Castro, the food producer and ‘right hand’ of Wolfgang Puck that we are all looking forward to.”

Presently under the masterful leadership of Madz alumnus Mark Anthony A. Carpio, the Philippine Madrigal Singers continues to set new standards of excellence at a global level. Since their humble beginnings as a university-based chamber ensemble throughout their legendary rise as international choral champions, this 42-year old cultural icon known as the Philippine Madrigal Singers has irreversibly cemented its stature as one of world’s best choirs for all time.

Can we ever get to where we're going? - Atty. Ramoncito Ocampo

There is not much exciting news from the Philippines lately as the massive scandals which have rocked the very core of the GMA Administration has subsided to the point that the Senate has recently announced that it is withdrawing the armed security escort for the once much-ballyhooed "whistle-blower" Lozada thereby practically pulling the rug under his feet. In fact, it has been reported that graft and corruption charges have recently been filed against Mr. Lozada and his immediate family for alleged "kickbacks" when he was the President of a government-owned/controlled corporation. Which makes one wonder why no similar charges were ever filed against former COMELEC Chairman Abalos for a seemingly clear-cut case of graft and corruption with regards to the ZTE-NBN deal. It truly makes one frustrated that in our country, anyone can get away with murder provided you know the right people in government. After all, in the Philippine "justice system" it is not much what you know about the law that counts but "who" you know in law enforcement. Again, we are left with the question of where do we go from here? In all retrospect, it has never been truer than it is now that, in order for the Filipino people to achieve any sense of unity and political, social and economic stability needed as a strong foundation for Filipino Nationhood, every Filipino who profess to believe and belong to the Catholic/Christian faith, must, as a matter of prerogative, put into practice, fundamental/essential doctrines of said spiritual persuasion. As written in 2 Cor. 5:14-15…"The love of God compels those of us who have reached the conviction that since Jesus Christ died for all, all of us died. He died for all so that we may no longer live for ourselves but for the sake of Jesus Who loved us and gave Himself to us." But in this day and age of every one looking our for #1, i.e., seeking one’s self-interest and self-centered agendas, this exhortation is much easier said than done. This is why one of my favorite verses in the Bible which I humorously and yet, in all sincerity, address as the letter of Paul to the Philippins 2:1-5 (supposedly Philippians but omitting the letter "a") states…"In the name of the encouragement you owe me in Christ, of the solace that love can give, of the fellowship of the Spirit, of compassion and pity, make my joy complete by your unanimity, united in spirit and ideals. Never act out of rivalry or deceit. Rather let each one of you think humbly of others as more superior to yourself, each one of you looking at the other person’s interests rather than your own. Your attitude must be the same as Jesus Christ."

What we were before is not as important or expedient as to what we can always be or aspire to be. Perhaps due to the fact that we have been a colonized people under the domination of foreigners…the Spaniards for about 500 years, the Americans for almost 42 years, the Japanese for 3-4 years and with more than 20 years of suppressive martial law under the Marcos regime…we are essentially a people with no strong sense of political will, self-worth and identity. As can be readily seen from our history, we are a hodgepodge of different and sometimes conflicting cultures/values brought about by these dominating influences such that as a people with a lot of young people, we are not sure exactly who we are now. Where we are going has not really been so well defined and unless we know who we are and where we are going, how do we expect to get there?

Presently, there is a growing clamor for profound changes in our political structure with many calling for a parliamentary or lately, a federal form of government as expounded by the Honorable Sen. Pimentel and the like. I dare to say that we may have the best system/form of government in the world, be it a presidential or a parliamentary system and in fact, a federal system but I solemnly declare and proclaim again and again to the Filipino people that unless we, as professing Christians, put into practice what we supposedly believe, truly reform our lives and change our hearts, our minds and our attitudes as one nation under one God and Father, with one Lord, one faith, one baptism and one Spirit, be other-centered and not self-centered, we will just go on in circles or "rigodon", as we call it. Philippine politics would always simply be a case of the same dog but with a different collar. Alibaba may very well be gone in 2010 but if the 40 thieves in the likeness and image of an "Abalos" are still around calling the shots, what else is new?…Di ba?
